Episode 141: Work in Progress: How I’m Balancing Creativity and Business and the Pricing Questions Every Course Creator Needs to Ask

Made Remarkable Podcast (45) (1)

Last week, I kicked off this new “work in progress” series, and I’ve honestly loved being able to connect directly every Friday. This week was incredible, truly life-affirming for me. I got out of town and took a workshop with Colleen Atara in Pennsylvania. I’ve been a teacher for so long and not a student, so being immersed in creativity and surrounded by genuine, inspiring women was just what I needed. I learned new techniques like cyanotype and creative image transfers, but more than that, I left feeling reconnected to my own creative energy. So much so, I’m planning to go back for a longer workshop this fall!

Balancing Creativity and Business:

Being deeply creative while also running a business supporting other creative entrepreneurs is a tricky balance. My coaching (specifically through Build It Remarkable) is a key part of who I am and the impact I want to have, but I’m always navigating how to bring my own art practice alongside that. I want to be the coach who actually does what she teaches, so you’ll be seeing more of that personal creative side from me going forward.

Deciding on Program Formats & Launching:

I’ve put SO much thought into the upcoming Build It Remarkable launch this August. Instead of a quick, eight-week bootcamp, I chose a supportive, year-long format because my priority is real transformation and ongoing accountability, not just ticking boxes or making quick sales. Don’t worry, the free five-day challenge in August is going to be packed with actionable insights to move your course or creative business forward.

Challenges Around Staying Inspired

I’m not alone in finding it hard to keep my own creativity alive while giving so much energy to the business side. Many in my community, like artist Kaylee Gray, make a point to take time out for solo creative retreats for that reason. For me, Fridays are (ideally!) set aside for art, but it’s definitely an ongoing journey to protect that space.

My advice? Fill your own cup so you have something to give others. The more I nurture my own creativity, the better I am at supporting everyone in my programs.

The (Wise!) Use of AI:

We talk about AI a lot in my mastermind groups. The short version is: I use AI (like ChatGPT, which I’ve named “Otis!”) as a brainstorming and organizational tool, never as a writer. I never use it for newsletters, captions, or any customer-facing communication. People can sense when it’s not your real voice. Structure, yes; content, no.

Pricing Wisdom Every Course Creator Needs:

Pricing always comes up with my coaching clients. The biggest lessons:

  • Pricing shouldn’t be based only on how many hours or modules are included. An edited, concise 20-minute lesson might be more valuable than an unedited, rambling 90 minutes.

  • Consider the purpose of your product (Is it your main offer? A “taste” to lead into something bigger? Is it evergreen or open/closed?) and how you’ll sell it (ads? organic?).

  • For lower-priced, evergreen offers, especially if you plan to promote with ads, keep it under $100 (and often under $50), so it’s more of an impulse purchase. Always ask: “What is my primary goal with this product, and how do I intend to sell it?” That drives a smart pricing decision, not just the content itself.

If you want even deeper insight into building a thriving course business, I urge you to get on my priority list for Build It Remarkable! And as always, reviews on the podcast mean the world to me, they truly help new listeners find these conversations.
