Episode 143: {WIP} Building a Course Business with a Conscience, Using Storytelling in Your Content and Why We NEED Art More Than Ever

Hello, friends, I'm so glad to be back with you after a short break! Sometimes, giving yourself permission to step back and enjoy life is exactly what you need to fully show up when you return. I just spent some much needed time in the mountains with my family, reconnecting with nature, art, and a sense of joy that only wide open skies can offer. Every year I go to this little rustic cabin in Pennsylvania, and every year, that wish to have a place of our own up there grows a little stronger.
Truthfully, this pause reminded me that, as a creator and educator, it's not always glamorous behind the scenes. Most days, it’s just me typing away on the couch beside my shedding dogs, crafting emails, fine-tuning sales pages, and getting all the pieces together to serve the community I love.
A New Vision for Course Creators
Right now, I’m pouring my energy into “Build It Remarkable.” This year, I've completely reimagined the program. I realized that real transformation, lasting, supported, conscious change, takes time. That’s why I shifted from a six-month container to a full-year experience at the same price, because community and consistency build true success. We start with an upfront intensive (think “college crash course”), but then I stick with you for the long haul as you implement, troubleshoot, and grow.
And let’s get honest: building a course business isn’t for everyone, and it isn’t an overnight win (unless you happen to be sitting on a hundred thousand followers and a gold-plated email list… most of us aren’t!). It’s a steady, persistent journey. If you’re geared up to share your gifts, help others, and bring creativity into the world, it is possible, and it doesn’t have to be exhausting if you have the right systems and mentorship behind you.
Storytelling: The Heartbeat of Authentic Marketing
Recently, I had a lightbulb moment with my community around a surprisingly simple concept: the power of storytelling. Many of us default to “directive” marketing (think: “here’s what you should do”), but what people genuinely connect with is authenticity, sharing what I do, what I've learned, or what I've struggled with. Telling your own story not only feels less pushy and more natural, but it’s also the bridge that invites your audience to see themselves within your experience.
If you’re marketing your business or teaching others, this is huge. Don’t be afraid to tell your story. Not only does it build real relationships, it’s also the most effective form of communication, way more so than a sterile, AI-generated newsletter or impersonal marketing copy.
Why We Need Art (and Each Other) More Than Ever
It’s impossible to ignore the heaviness of the world right now. It can feel overwhelming and suffocating. But as I shared on the podcast, I keep coming back to art and creativity as essential medicine for the soul, our source of resilience, joy, and even rebellion.
I was so moved by a piece Ardith Goodwin shared recently, which echoes what’s always in my heart: Your joy is a rebellion. Your art is a rebellion. Creativity is the space that holds us when the world feels unbearable. To quote Toni Morrison, “This is precisely the time when artists go to work… That is how civilizations heal.” I believe that with everything I have.
Don’t let yourself believe your creative pursuits are frivolous, especially now. Whether we show up as activists, fundraisers, or gentle makers who spread joy in small circles, we are all making change in our own way.
A Few Wins and Wisdoms from the Community
I want to take a moment to celebrate the small and big! wins. One program member recently beta-tested her course, and even though she was one sign-up short of her goal, I see that as a major triumph! Every step forward, every good-faith effort, matters. Sometimes, even when numbers don’t match our hopes, we’re making more progress than we realize.
And a gentle reminder, especially for those a little further along: double down on what’s already working before you pile on new offers or platforms. Consistency brings compounding results, there’s no need to be everywhere, doing everything, all at once!
If you’re just getting started? My top advice: pick your email provider, start your list, and practice showing up and sharing on Instagram. You’ll figure out your direction as you go, but these simple habits are the seeds of a thriving business down the road.
Above All: Keep Going
No matter where you are, starting out or growing bigger, remember that sharing your art, your story, your authentic self, is not trivial. It’s exactly what the world needs now. So, let’s keep making, keep teaching, and keep lifting each other up. If you’re interested in joining me in “Build It Remarkable,” now’s the time, reach out, or mark your calendar for our big late-August challenge!
Thank you for being part of this remarkable community. Together, I know we can make something beautiful.
